Object Writing: Polka Dot

Upon entering the store something felt different. Perhaps the drone over the speakers was more nondescript than normal. Maybe the sterile sheen of floor tiles, impregnable and glowing without scuff or stain. She pressed past the automatic gates determined to grab what she needed and leave. The air pressing in like eyes in the dark…

So this is the first one where I feel I've truly tried to create an “other” world. It took me a lot longer to find the right word for what I was hoping to say but under a time limit by brain is incredibly adept at tucking away the words I'm chasing.

You may be thinking, where's the “polka dot”?! Well, my friend, I was working towards “..she waded past the polka dot cheese and found herself…” but alas, I ran out of time. I thought of Swiss cheese but the fact it was ‘polka-dot cheese’ made it seem like it came from another world that both made sense and didn't make sense.

Things I would have like to change:

  • Perhaps the nondescript drone from the speakers seemed more nondescript than usual
  • Maybe it was the glossy sheen of the floor tiles, absent to the scars of fair wear and tear that archive the thousands footfalls, minor renovations and lingering shadows of change that accompany age.
  • Keep it from the same perspective: She pressed past = Pressing past the automatic gates, a determination set in, grab, pay, and get out.

What happens after you press past the polka dot cheese?
