Object Writing: Hospital

The train track lights keep a stiff clarity along the halls and within more precarious wards. Focused hands and hurried minds scan across diagnosis and recovery. Bedside words are given heart, lifting weary minds to beyond recovery or steeling them for a different future. Perspective shift like tidal waves forcing the outgoing tide back in….

Going in on topics like hospitals, dentist, surgery, procedure always draw my mind to more dramatic moments (just like the TV shows do - Grey's Anatomy, House etc). It feels like it's easy to try and create drama in those environments. I tried to write from the perspective of an observer. A complete third party not tied to anyone in the hospital, working or other. Part way through I realised there's nothing wrong with the reality that some people do get bad news while others recover (i.e. it's okay the world isn't perfect).

It felt easier to write from that perspective to feel it how it is, rather than focus on the emotional drama of the ‘tidal shift'. If I had more time, I would have written how it feels humorous that often people who've received bad news get this refreshing perspective on life and how they should actually be spending their time which is reinforced by the people treating them, but the people treating them don't follow the same advice. I think there's an interesting statement about the reality of life and routine in there.
