Welcome back to object writing! If you're new to what object writing is then let me introduce you, it's a way to explore the senses through writing run as a daily exercise. The senses, specifically, are Touch, Taste, Smell, Sight and sound as well as kinaesthetic and organic. You use these senses to guide your writing and discover different ways to describe something, create metaphors or simply find a pattern in your own writing. Masterclass.com do a little write up on it so make sure to have a read.
I was introduced to this by Pat Pattison when he came to Australia for a week long songwriting seminar and it has been an absolute delightful way to improve my songwriting.
This weeks:
A healthy river of sweat had breached the rim of her hat following the trails of her beet-red face, shaking off with each swing of the shovel. A generous pile of dirt had formed beside her with tufts of grass sticking out like legs of an upturned grandma in a sandpit accepting their fat as they await help. Naked lawn grubs wriggled against the light before being flipped to the butcher bird waiting on a nearby fence post.
My main focus each time is for the prompt word not to be placed so obviously in my object writing so I look at the world around it or I use it to help me explore another focal point altogether.
How do you approach your object writing?
Feel free to use the prompts and add your own object writing in the comment section below!
