A rolling coin ripples along the countertop, rolling further from the hand that grasps in its wake. With the faint metallic smell of the fingers, it is clear where this coin erupted from. The steep precipice of the counter saw no tremors of hesitation as the coin leapt, plummeting to the coffee stained vinyl flooring below. For a moment the coin shimmered, a pinwheel kissing circles on the floor before coming to a silent halt. Desperate fingers fumbled to grasp its edges, bitten nails useless beneath the padded skin that enshrouded them. They swept at the edges, gliding it along the floor, frantic and frustrated. For a brief moment the edge lifted but slammed back down with a haphazard finger. The screeching groan released into the air begged for a better day and a sip of that damn coffee.
I was actually doing some French lessons this morning, working on l'argent and la monnaie among various other money related words so as soon as I saw Buyer I thought cash. I guess I never left that topic though. I feel sorry for the pour soul who's coin rattled across the counter.
Have you ever dropped coins right as you were going to pay and then had to fumble around to pick them up? That is what I was going for. That and a memory of this horrific episode of either Ren and Stimpy or Cow and Chicken where one of the characters was a nail biter and couldn't pick up the coin.
Actually, after googling which one it was I've remembered it was Rocko's Modern Life. I remember the way they animated it made me super uncomfortable.
